Unless you were living in a cave, you heard Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” plenty of times the summer they released on 2006’s St. Elsewhere. It was a brilliant introduction to a hip-hop duo that’s pushed the boundaries of the genre to the breaking point. With hit-studded records pouring from the studio, this is a band you want to hear live!
Barkley is one part Brian Burton—better known to the world as DJ Danger Mouse—and one part Cee-Lo Green, rapper extraordinaire. Danger Mouse made a name for himself in the early ‘00s by mashing up Jay-Z’s Black Album with The Beatles’ White Album (making The Grey Album)and subsequently becoming the most desired producer in the industry. He’s gone on to produce Gorillaz, Beck and Sage Francis, and collaborated with MF Doom.
With beats and lyrics outside of mainstream hip-hop, Gnarls Barkley is taking the genre in new directions. In 2008, the duo released The Odd Couple, an aptly-titled record for the Laurel and Hardy-sized music makers. Concert tickets to see them live are prized.
